Is your system losing its time and date setting, or are you getting some error messages? Then you need to change or replace CMOS Battery in your Desktop Computer.

Firstly, I will give you some information about what is CMOS Battery and then I will jump to how to remove or replace the CMOS battery.

What is a CMOS battery

The full form of CMOS is Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. It is a coined-sized lithium battery that is responsible for providing the power to the CMOS RAM. It stores the primary system’s hardware arrangement; for example-
1. Date and Time
2. Basic Input and Output Settings.
Since the CMOS RAM will lose all data once powers go off, it must be powered as all RAMS do. That is why your system requires a CMOS battery. Most systems utilize a coin-sized 3 volts lithium battery.

CMOS battery failure symptoms

  1. System is deprived of Time and Date setting.
  2. When the system restarts, the following error messages are shown-
  • CMOS Read Error.
  • CMOS Checksum Error.
  • CMOS Battery Failure.
  • System Battery voltage is low.

If any of these messages are shown or any problems are occurring, you need to change your system’s CMOS Battery.
Now when I have told you the problems you should change the CMOS Battery, then now I will tell you how to change it. I am going to write the steps of how to do it. Follow the steps and change/replace it carefully.

How to remove a CMOS battery

  • Turn off the Desktop Computer and disconnect it from the wall socket.
  • Keep it in an area where you can remove its upper part and where there is enough light so that you can see all the parts carefully.
  • Now I can not tell you how to remove the upper cover of the cabinet to access Motherboard . It depends on the model that you possess. However, technicians follow a basic rule, and that is to Observe your system with concentration, and you will be to do it.
  • Now that you have removed the upper cover, what do you see? Dust on most of the components. That is because you don’t clean your system from inside regularly. And if it is clean, then keep it that way only. The motherboard has lots of components, but one of them is CMOS Battery, which you should be able to see easily, and if not able to find it, then ask someone.
[wp-svg-icons icon=”notebook” wrap=”b”] Important Note:
Before touching any of the components, take care of ESD Precautions. Now the question arises that what are ESD Precautions?
ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge. According to this, you should not have any watch or wrist band in your hand. Because if you have that, then when you will touch the metal components, this will drain all the charges you have in your body and bring the potential to that equal to your system. This is an important step to protect your system from Electrostatic Discharge.

Are you done with all the steps written above? Now remove the battery very carefully. Note down how it had been inserted. It has a positive and negative side. The positive side should be facing the upside. And also, see the hooks holding it into position so that you can remove it.

How to replace a CMOS battery

  • Now, insert your CMOS Battery in the motherboard CMOS battery space, press to lock and then cover the top of the system. Boom! You have changed the CMOS Battery successfully.
  • Now turn on the Desktop Computer
  • Cange/set the time and date setting and any other changes you would like to have.
  • Your system won’t lose its memory from now onwards.

Things to remember about CMOS Battery

  • Do not trash it in the fire.
  • Keep it in a cool and dry place.
  • Put back the battery in the right position.
  • Clean the battery before using it.
  • Properly throw the battery.

I hope the steps were clear, and you were able to change the battery. Thank you so much for reading.
