Run the Troubleshooter

  1. Open the Search bar by moving the mouse pointer to search icon just near the Start Menu icon in the Windows 10 taskbar.
  2. Go the search box present in the taskbar of Windows 10.
  3. Enter Control Panel in the search box.
  4. Click on the Control Panel icon.

  5. Now you can see the Troubleshooting option on your screen—Left-click on the troubleshooting feature.

  6. Left click on the view all button present on the left side of the screen

  7. Now your Windows 10 screen appears full of options, left click on the Windows Updates.

  8. Look for the Next option on the lower side of the window and lest click on it.

  9. Just follow the instructions appearing on your window 10 screen to complete the windows update troubleshooter.
  10. Finish the troubleshoot process and then reboot your pc.If you still face the issue, try again and see the result.

Refresh your Windows 10 PC

  1. Go the Settings options in Windows 10.

  2. Tap on Update and Security and navigate to Recovery on the left side on the windows.

  3. Click on Get started under reset this PC tab.
    Click on Get started under reset this PC
  4. You will see two options on your screen, select Keep my files from those options and it will remove all the applications and settings from this Windows 10 PC, and your files will be untouched (it will not be deleted) in short, your pc will be refreshed.

Perform an SFC scan

If you are a windows 10 user and facing a similar error message, you can fix the problem by just performing an SFC scan as it will help you to fix the file corruption, which may be the possible reason for this error.

Steps to follow:

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows key + X. Go to the Windows PowerShell as admin from the list appearing on your screen. You can also use Command Prompt as admin in place of Windows PowerShell if it is not available.

  2. When command prompt gets started, enter sfc /scannow and press the enter key to run it. The scanning process will begin now. It will take about 15 minutes to finish the scanning.

  3. When scanning is completely over, check if the problem still exists or not. If it exists, try using DISM scan .just open the Windows PoweShell or Command Prompt as admin and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command. DISM will take approx 20 min to finish the scanning process.
Important Note:
DISM Scan can take upto 20 minutes or more depending on your system resources, please do not try to interrupt or close it and also keep a watch at the screen if it displays some error message and if the process is completed successfully then check for the issue, hope it solves the issue.

Restart Windows Update Service and rename the affected files

One of the very convenient ways to fix this error is by simply disabling the update service and renaming the affected directories. Follow these steps to fix the issue

  • Open the command prompt as administrator from the start menu by typing command prompt  the search bar.
  • When command prompts opens on your screen, enter the following commands;
  • net stop wuauserv
  • net stop cryptSvc
  • net stop bits
  • net stop msiserver
  • ren
  • {C:windowsSoftwareDistributionSoftwareDistribution.old}
  • ren
  • {C:windowsSystem32catroot2Catroot2.old}
  • net start wuauserv
  • net start cryptSvc
  • net start bits
    net start msiserver
  • Restart your pc now and try to install windows updates again.

Perform a clean boot

One of the possible reasons for the error occurring might be the third-party applications. As the third party application might interfere with windows ten and cause the error.
perform the following steps to perform a clean boot.

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows key +R and enter msconfig, and click on OK.

  2. Navigate to the services tab and check to Hide all Microsoft services. Tap on the Disable all button.
  3. Visit the startup tab and click on the open task manager.
  4. A list appears on your screen. Right-click on the first application on the list and select disable. and perform the same step for all the options enlisted.

  5. Open the system configuration windows again and tap on Apply and OK. If you are asked to restart your pc, click on the restart now option.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
